ABSTRACT

A total of one hundred fifty children with tinea capitis was assessed by Wood's light examination, direct KOH mount smear and culture on modified Sabouraud's dextrose agar media to check for presence of Microsporum canis. On Wood's light examination, abrilliant fluorescence was been in 71 [47.3%] of these 150 patients. Culture of fluorescent hair showed the presence of Microsporum canis in 48 [67.6%] of the fluorecent cases, but no other dermatophytes were isolated in the remaining 23 cases. The direct smear showed the presence of fungal elements in all of the cases, while growth of dermatophyte was posivity in 95 [63.3% of affected children. Species identification revealed the presence of Microsporum canis in 55 [57.8%] of the positive dermatophyte cultures
